Cost

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 60–85% less than a natural diamond of comparable size and quality. For clients prioritising a larger stone or a lower budget, this is often the deciding factor.

Rarity and value retention

Natural diamonds benefit from genuine geological scarcity, which has historically supported resale and heirloom value. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced at scale, and their retail prices have been falling — meaning they generally hold less resale value over time. If long-term value retention matters to you, this is worth weighing carefully.

Sustainability and sourcing

Lab-grown diamonds avoid the environmental footprint of mining, though production is energy-intensive and the source of that energy matters. Natural diamonds sourced through reputable, traceable supply chains — as I do — avoid the ethical concerns historically associated with the industry, while supporting mining communities where sourcing is responsible.

Certification either way

Whichever you choose, certification is non-negotiable. Reputable labs clearly identify lab-grown stones on their reports, and a trustworthy seller will never blur that distinction. I only work with certified stones of either origin, and I explain the trade-offs plainly before you decide.
